Let’s Make A Vinyl Project Pouch

Want to make a vinyl project pouch?! I’m obsessed with making them. They are perfect for storing WIPs- cross stitch, sewing, EPP, and more!

Below is a free tutorial on how-to make a 14″ x 11″ vinyl project pouch. If you would like to make a different size, please click HERE.

Before we get started, let’s talks about vinyl. I’ve been using glitter vinyl from Sew Hungry Hippie’s Etsy Shop and it’s my favorite! I suggest using 10-16 gauge. I normally use my regular sewing foot and have no issues sewing the vinyl. If you do experience issues, try using a non-stick Teflon Foot. Feel free to play around with different vinyls to see which one is your favorite!

Before you begin:

• Read through entire tutorial.
• Measurements: Length x Height
• Seam allowance: 1/4″
• Pick your favorite fabrics + have fun!

Supplies

• (1) Fusible Fleece (or your choice of interfacing) 14″ x 11″
• (1) Front Fabric: 14″ x 11″
• (1) Back Fabric: 14″ x 11″
• (1) Top Fabric Strip: 14″ x 4″
• (1) Bottom Fabric Strip: 14″ x 3″
• (1) Vinyl: 14″ x 8.5″
• (1) Zipper: 16″ or larger
• Binding: 2.5″ approx. 60″ (or your choice of binding)

Note: Fabric used below is a mix of Deer Christmas and Santa Claus Lane fabric that I purchased from Crimson Confection’s Etsy Shop. So cute!

Ready. Set. Sew.

Assemble Front + Back Panel

• Following manufacturer’s instructions, add Fusible Fleece (or your choice of interfacing) to the back of front fabric.
• Place front fabric right side down.
• Place back fabric on top of interfacing right side up, align, and secure by using pins or basting spray.
• Quilt the layers as desired. Note: this panel was quilted with a 1.5″ cross hatch design.

Prepare Zipper

• Fold the 14″ x 4″ top strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press.
• Repeat with the 14″ x 3″ bottom strip. Fold each side again to crease line and press. Fold once more and press.
• Grab your closed zipper, teeth side up and zipper pull to the left (you can place it to the left or right-whichever direction you prefer).
• Place the creased part of the strips onto the zipper 1/4″ and topstitch 1/8″. Note: I use 1/4″ double stick fusible tape when a zipper is involved-helps so much! I put the tape down on the zipper first and then lay the fabric on top and press. Please see pic below.

Attach Vinyl

• Slip vinyl approx. 1/4″-1/2″ between the 14″ x 3″ double-folded fabric strip.
• Topstitch the bottom of the fabric strip 1/8″ securing fabric and vinyl. See below.

Assemble Vinyl Pouch

• Place zipper/vinyl on top of front pouch fabric. Clip top of pouch to hold in place.
• Unzip zipper halfway.
• Baste sides of zipper and trim.
• Ensure project pouch is squared up and all sides are even. Trim the pouch as needed and clip to hold in place.

Attach binding

Feel free to attach the binding using your preferred method. I normally sew the binding using 1/4″ seam allowance to the front and hand stitch to the back.

Currently, I’m practicing machine binding and finding it helpful to attach to the back and then machine bind it down to the front. This way, I can see where I’m sewing. So many different techniques! Please do what works best for you!
